Mardi Gra Party

Mardi Gra was a big hit here at Twin Rivers.  The residents loved the lunch, deep fried shrimp, dirty rice, asparagus and Mardi Gra cupcakes.  The party was fun also with masks and crowns.  We played a game to win beaded necklaces.  Fun was had by all!   Hats off to the leader of the pack “Lora Keeney” activity Coordinator.  She made the party so much fun!!!

Carnation Angel Craft

Our residents enjoyed making Carnation angels.  The craft was such a hit that they plan on making a valentine, St. Patrick’s Day and a Easter one with all the appropriate colors for the month!  Great job Lora!

Babies Bring Comfort to Memory Care Residents

There are few things more comforting then holding a brand new baby in your arms. Yesterday I had the privilege of playing “mommy” with two of my female residents who spent over forty minutes rocking, cooing and holding two plastic dolls, treating them as if they were as real as their own flesh and blood. The smiles on their faces and their intimate dialogue with those babies were truly priceless.

For many of our female residents in our memory care environment, they revert back to that special time when they were nurturing and caring for their babies. It may appear odd to the average person who sees a woman talking to and holding a plastic baby doll as if it were a real human being, but in their reality, it is the most natural and comforting thing for them to do.  As caregivers at Twin Rivers Senior Campus, we believe that it is necessary to do anything that we can  to provide understanding and familiarity for those who are affected by dementia, even if it doesn’t seem to match our reality.

Activities to do with your Loved one who has Dementia

Many family members and friends of people who are battling the disease of dementia will tell you that knowing what to do in their time together is a great challenge. During our last “Journey of Hope” meeting, we discussed the importance of having a “bridge” between you and your loved one, with that bridge being the connecting piece above the tumultuous waters that represent dementia. Below you will find a list of activities that can serve as a “bridge” during your time together.
